What advice would you give to your teenage self?
My title of course references the song by Kajagoogoo.
Now, if I gave advice to my teenage self, would he listen? There’s a famous quote by Goethe who suggests that young people never listen to their elders and that they have to discover things on their own. And don’t forget he said that in the 18th Century!
However, my advice to my younger self would be, “Don’t be so shy. Get out there. Have fun.” This is basically what happens in my audio drama, Kid Again, a work of speculative autobiographical fiction where a married man (with a baby on the way) discovers, while packing, some journals he wrote when he was a teenager. He doesn’t remember them at all. He goes to bed and then wakes up back in his high school freshman classroom.
Is it a dream? Did he time travel? We don’t know, but he decides to put the benefit of his adult experience (which he recalls) to good use in having much more fun this time around.
That’s advice my younger self could really put to good use—stop being so timid and really enjoy life. (But would that change who I am now? I’m not sure.)
