Hypokrites! How’s the Wife and Kids?

What do you complain about the most?

In Ancient Greece, hypokrites meant actor. So I would never mind that reference, but I would detest if anyone called me a hypocrite, because that is the sin/wrong/transgression I rail against the most.

There is a great range of hypocrisy. A person says, “I’m a vegetarian but I will eat meat on occasion” is low on the list (but still on the list!). Politicians who denounce a particular behavior but then are found guilty of that same behavior (and they should feel guilty, because they are hypocritical about it!) are very high on the list. I don’t feel the need to provide an example, since you just need to consult the news on almost any day and find at least one; usually it’s an anti-LGBTQ+ person caught in a threesome or in an airport restroom stall, or someone who claims to be “pro-life” paying for an abortion for his mistress so his wife and constituents don’t find out. Sorry, I guess I just couldn’t resist giving examples.

And it seems I share this dislike with Jesus, now that I think about it. The whole, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” bit is a condemnation of hypocrisy. And this of course presents us with another prime example: those who consider themselves religious and Christian but who defy one of the basic teachings of the person they say they follow.

It’s one thing to complain about social media and then revel in the number of likes a post gets (and okay, I’m guilt of that one!) but to constantly wear the mask of the hypocrite is something I will not soon stop attacking.

  1. Thank you for this. I know none of us are perfect but I agree with you. It there is something I am not sure on where I stand, I keep my mouth closed.
