I Won the Lottery!

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Okay, maybe that should read, “I have won the lottery.” Maybe twice. But I have no idea what happened to that $10.

I assume that the prompt means, “What if you won the lottery with a massive payout and now have millions of dollars, not to mention long-lost relatives, scam girls, and bitcoin investors, to worry about?” Of course, the latter two concerns are a constant in our online lives, so maybe things wouldn’t change that much.

In a way, this question echoes my own thoughts when considering my financial legacy, with bank accounts, investments, and so on. Where can I leave my money where it will do the most good?

A few years ago I thought I would endow some scholarships at my campus, and even had that provision in my will. But on further reflection, I realized that the people in charge of such charitable giving weren’t really that reliable, and I didn’t want to rely on haunting them after my death to keep them on the rails. So I took out that provision.

I’ve also considered a scholarship at UC Berkeley for Theatre and Performance Studies students. I’d need assurances that it would be set up and managed properly. Of course, even though my attendance at Berkeley had a tremendous effect on me, I wonder if an endowed scholarship would have much of an effect on someone else.

And then I watch those damn emotion-wrenching St. Jude commercials, and think, maybe they might benefit from the whole kit-n-kaboodle. I might have to do more research into them.

In the meantime, I’m doing my best to stay alive and healthy and delay the thoughts about bequests for another day.

Oh, and I never buy lottery tickets. I’m just not that much of a gambler.
