Anywhere?

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

For most of my life I did only domestic traveling because I either didn’t have the time to go elsewhere, or more likely I didn’t have the money. Now that I’m adding some destinations to my list, I can better answer this prompt.

I’m limiting my choices to where I’ve been, since it’s all well and good to romanticize a place, only to find the reality is not true to the imagined location. So, some possibilities.

I liked Toronto which was a much bigger city than I expected. I stayed there when visiting Niagara Falls. I see no particular reason to relocate there (unless America goes fascist after the 2024 election). One draw would be a former student of mine with whom I’d like to reconnect. She’s married now, though, so…

My Viking river cruise didn’t expose me to enough German cities that I would consider moving there. I did enjoy Edinburgh, Scotland and Dublin, Ireland enough that either would make a nice trial run for relocation.

But where would I really move to? Or shall we say when? The San Francisco of the Star Trek future. Clean, modern (ultra-modern? Futuristic?) and an idea place to live. And they probably worked out the earthquake thing too. So that’s my choice.

For the moment, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in southwestern Pennsylvania works for me. The climate is moderate, though we’ll see what happens in the upcoming El Niño winter during a time of climate change.

  1. A friend of mine is living the dream! She’s working on an organic sustainable farm in Hawaii where she can swim naked in a stream in the afternoons it is so private. However, this is the second try. Unbeknownst to her, the first sanctuary she worked at turned out to be a cover for a meth lab. It was a terrifying experience! But, we talked and I said to her that if she didn’t give the dream a second try, she would never forgive herself. She is now settled on another island on a legitimate organic sustainable farm and what she dreamed and believed is coming true.
