Writing!

What do you enjoy most about writing?

An easy prompt!

I’ve been working on these blog posts for 148 days in a row, according to my daily notifications. I started it mostly to have the opportunity to write a little bit each day, since that’s something that’s often suggested for writers to do to stay active.

Somewhere along the line, though, I think I switched from “daily exercise” and occasional “plug for my other work” to “self-expression.” How do I paint a full portrait of my life and philosophy, and also allow myself a creative outlet? Sometimes I just respond to the prompt and let that guide me. Other times, and I think equally successfully, I write something that is a more profound expression of my creativity and thought.

Years ago, I discovered that my best work takes shape in allegory. I like writing about things that are either veiled or obvious references to something else. I hope to keep this up as the days and prompts keep coming.

Writing helps me in the same way. I ponder an idea and I love the feeling of letting the gears in my brain churn and eventually spit something back out at me. Then I run and write it down or compose that riff. Much like giving my brain a prompt and letting my creativity run on auto-pilot.
