Peace

What brings you peace?

There’s a lot of turmoil going on right now, so much so I won’t make a joke about Turmoil being some kind of cleanser that leaves things messier than started.

Or maybe I will! Because saying stupid/witty improvised comments makes me happy, and I wish more people around me appreciated the quick comments, no matter how silly or inane they are.

As for peace, lately I’ve been walking for exercise. No matter what’s been going on, rushing around, doing various things, being subjected to a frantic moment, once I’ve walked about a half mile, I’ve forgotten what was happening before I started the exercise calculator on my Apple Watch. I lean in—literally, since it helps me move faster—and walk about 2 miles before looping home.

Sometimes I’m wired on endorphins, sometimes I’m tired from the exertion, but the walk always cancels out whatever came before. Temporary peace? Yes, but I’ll take it.

  1. Seeing my son asleep after he has enjoyed a filling, nutritious, delicious meal I made. Ditto my wife. An intense brief workout, emphasizing careful resistance training, A spontaneous quiet prayer. Any reports that my loved ones are well. An unexpected call from a friend who just want to chat for a while.

  2. Walking through nature helps me feel peace. Or some good ol “quiet” is a great pairing with peace. Although, I enjoy feeling the bass of thunder and the sound of rain.
