The Uniform

If you were forced to wear one outfit over and over again, what would it be?

I find this to be an amusing little prompt. 1) Who would want to? 2) I kinda used to!

When I was teaching I had a “sort of” uniform: I was known for wearing black jeans. On the rare occasions that I wore blue, a colleague would shield her eyes and say, “Too bright!” I topped the jeans off with a button-down Oxford cloth shirt. (Wrinkle resistant; wash, dry, go.) I had a variety of colors, but I always wore black for the first day of class, and dark for the first two weeks of classes so people would think I always wore black, even when I wore the light blue shirt (also “too bright! Blinding!”).

For evening wear, when directing, I’d remove the Oxford cloth shirt, revealing a band T-shirt under it. I have a lot of these from my concert-going. And, since the theater was usually freezing, I’d have a hooded jacket over it. Top it with my Kangol cap, and my students could recognize me half a campus away. (Yes, it was a small campus.)

When the students decided to create me in effigy for some Student Services contest, that was the look they worked from.

As I approached retirement, I branched into blue jeans. Dark blue, of course. And in retirement, my daily wear is usually blue jeans, either those in decent shape for relaxing or worn jeans for working. (My knees wear out just like they did back in the 1970s, at no extra cost to me!) Of course, I wear brighter clothes and other colors for vacations and cruises, but some days I miss the simplicity of the black jean era.
