This episode of Audio Chimera contains episode 2 of Kid Again, my audio drama series that debuted in AC episode 44. As you recall, Mike has suddenly found himself again at the age of 14 and back in Catholic School. When he realizes where he is, he realizes the potential of the situation and begins pushing the boundaries of what he can say and do since he still remembers all of his adult life. Here he explains the facts of life to Kenneth and later meets Abigail who is intrigued by his questions about abortion as expressed in religion class.
After the KA episode, I make a few comments about my own views on abortion, which oddly enough, echo my own. I am amazed that, for many people, this is their only issue. Forget about global climate change and the death of the planet, forget about social and financial inequality, forget about education; what about the fetuses?
As I say in the podcast, if you ban abortion, then you have a whole slew of problems to deal with: prenatal care, postnatal care, and many more economic impacts that so-called fiscal conservative Republicans apparently have no idea what they’re in for. To further that argument: if the fetus is a person, will the government be giving support to the women who are forced to bear children with no access to abortion? Probably not.
I fear that banning abortion strengthens the foundation for the American Taliban to enact religious laws that bring us closer to Margaret Atwood’s world of The Handmaid’s Tale. And I for one refuse to live in Gilead….
