Serious Comics

In grade school, we had access to a comic book publication that was handed out by the nuns. I’m sure it was to promote reading, and it certainly did that, but it impressed a couple of things on my long-term memory. These graphics still pop up, unbidden, or relatively unbidden, even today.

One of them was a robin stalking a worm. The word balloon coming out of the robin said, “ Do I see him or do I hear him? That’s a secret.” I often think of that—not entirely unbidden, but when I see a robin or two leaping about a grassy area. And I love the fact that, not knowing how the robin detects the worm, the comic writers kept it hidden.

Another cartoon panel was of a tap dancing, spider, whose feet, depicted as black ovals, were recorded as saying, “Tap tap tippety tap.” When I think of doing a dance (which I don’t) those four words pop into my mind.

And somewhere, I’m not sure what character this was related to, but with puckered lips, the creature said “Kissy Kissy.”

Again, I wish I could remember what the comic book series was called, but they certainly had images that stuck with me.
