Surreal Doodle

I’ve been in many boring meetings in my time as a faculty member, and before that I spent much time in occasionally boring classes. Somewhere I developed a doodle that I find to be a lot of fun, and hopefully you’ll find it interesting.

It’s the graphic version of the Surrealist’s automatic writing exercise. There, one just starts to write, stream-of-consciousness, whatever comes to mind. The doodle’s a little different: you just start making pencil or pen strokes at random, until you either decide it’s finished or you see something in it and add a few strokes to give it a final shape.

I have lots of these scattered through my notes. Sometimes they’re no larger than a silver dollar, but others can get large. Here’s one of the latter.

The next time you get bored at a meeting or on a zoom call, give it a try.
