What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?
Well, don’t we all? Doesn’t the desire for longevity flow through te veins and neurons of almost all humans? Aren’t we fascinated by vampires and other immortal creatures for exactly that reason—we all want to live forever?
Of course, our genes have something to say about that. For some, their lifespans are dictated by their genetic makeup, like the Replicants of Blade Runner who had only a short time to live.
And so we try all sorts of things to stay healthy and live longer. (That’s an assumption, though; some people don’t take care of themselves as well as they should. My late wife, with all her medical training, failed, or refused, to see the warning signs in herself.) We eat right, get exercise, maybe even swallow supplements and minerals to keep ourselves well.
Some might even wear masks at Walmart in spite of the contemptuous looks we get.
This all presupposes a future we want to live into. Lately, in spite of all sorts of medical and scientific advances, the world seems to be sitting in the proverbial hand basket and sliding quickly down the steep slope to hell.
So we have a dilemma: stay alive as long as we can and see what happens in the world, or live for the moment and leave the future to those who might make it and yet find an unlivable environment?
I’m inclined to stay alive and work for the betterment of things. It just might be that the religious fanatics are wrong, Jesus is not coming back, and they will be stuck in the mess of their own creation. Maybe I can provide some aid and comfort to the misguided.
