Share what you know about the year you were born.
While 1957 wasn’t technically before my time, it’s before my memory-gathering kicked in. So I personally have no memories of that year to report. (Any tales of my infancy are just hearsay and therefore inadmissible here!)
What do I know historically? The Sputnik satellite was launched by the Russians that year, shaking up, and I guess turbo-charging, the whole space race thing. That competition would keep me entertained and energized during my youth.
As for other historical events of 1957…I just don’t know any, without googling? (Can I say googling, or is that part of the monopolizing practice Google was on trial for?) I know vaguely who was president of the US, that there were three TV networks, and likely three big US automakers. My, how times have changed!
To swerve into the lane of editorial comment for a moment, though, I wouldn’t recommend going back. I often hear an argument for a simpler time, but those same people likely moan and complain when there isn’t free WI-FI. What they want is the good old God-fearing unbridled racism of the day without losing any modern conveniences.
Sounds like the Taliban to me.
