To The Moon…AND Back?

How much would you pay to go to the moon?

Today’s prompt assumes (I hope) that some sort of Earth to the Moon route has been established with reasonable rates for the average Terran. Otherwise I will have to launch into a socialist rant about billionaires and space travel and how it’s a harbinger of a bleak dystopian future where the moneyed class flee the planet and live in an Elysium-like pristine space station while the rest of us languish down here.

Name the movie! Take your time—there’s quite a few.

In any case, do I want to go to the Moon? Or Mars? or even a space station designed as an orbiting cruise ship? Maybe the latter; it would take up a lot less time. Destination: Moon? Maybe, depending on the accommodations once I’ve arrived. (I once proclaimed that if there was not an omelet station in the afterlife, I’m not going.) Mars is right out, since it’s a bit far to beam my social security and pension payments.

All facetiousness aside, I would love to explore space, with the guarantee of no risk to life or limb. And it would have to be affordable; no financing options please. Let me check your website for the rates.

Okay, I dipped back into facetiousness there. I guess I’m not taking the prompt seriously. If space tourism would gain a toehold, likely it will be prohibitively expensive and beyond the reach of most mortal men and women. If not, kudos to the human race, which seems more bent on self- and other-destruction than finding a tall ship and a star to steer her by.

Please note that I’ve included several move titles and some direct and paraphrased quotations in this post. Did you see them? Remark in the comments if you did!

Incidentally, on a recent trip inside a bank (yes, that still happens), my teller’s sleeve was rolled up enough for me to see most of her forearm tattoo which read, “Love you to the moon” but that’s all I could see. Hence my post’s title.

  1. I love you to the moon and back!
    That’s the complete phrase.
I adore watching the moon in a night sky. I have done this ever since I was a child. Most recently, I sat on the fire escape to gaze at the super blue moon. However, my longing for space travel has always been to see a star. Maybe that’s why I catch myself humming the tune,Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, so often.

  2. Now that I think about it… I once purchased a one month Greyhound pass for around $575 and a roundtrip to Tokyo was $1200. I’d pay up to $2000 to visit the moon, hell ya.
