Day Eight: The Pain! The Pain!

My title echoes two things: Dr. Smith on the 1960s TV series Lost in Space who was always melodramatically aggrieved and would demonstrate it by saying, “Oh, the pain! The Pain!” The second echo comes from the Ayreon album, The Human Equation, following the mental workings of a comatose man after a car crash. The songs are each labeled, “Day One,” “Day Two,” and so on, through “Vigil,” Isolation,” Mystery,” etc. There Day Three is Pain, but our Day Eight was a bit of a painful day.

First, we were up earlier than usual so we could be aboard the bus to make the ferry for the crossing to Wales. The ferry ride was four hours long and exceptionally choppy. Barf bags decorated many horizontal (though occasionally diagonal) surfaces, but we finally made it over.

The ferry in the grey distance.

Then there was another lengthy bus ride to Cardiff Castle. The castle itself was quite interesting, and our tour guide did an excellent job of explaining the many things we were seeing from the Victorian re-design. Somehow our entire group survived the spiral staircases, and I counted that stop as a positive along the way.

Then, back on the bus for the “Be My Guest Experience,” also known as dinner at a vineyard. Their red wine was acceptable, but their white wine was not, so Joyce added some necessary sugar to make it palatable. The dinner was also acceptable, but not incredible, so the hype about it did not pay off.

The fountain beavers.

No “happy little trees” here!

We were happy to get to our hotel, blissfully not a Novatel like we had stayed in days earlier; I mean, really, a Novatel? Again, this was better than that, and we slept the sleep of the dead.

  1. It’s a new morning. I will try leaving my comment for a third time.
I liked this post for a few reasons. First, I have fibromyalgia. The reference to Dr. Smith saying, “Oh, the pain! The Pain!”, on Lost in Space will give another humorous coping mechanism for those nasty flare-up days. Second, the fountain beavers caught me off-guard and I laughed out loud. It never occurred to me to use beavers as ornamental fountain creatures. It works! Third, I liked the picture of the lovely Joyce standing in the main dining room and I could almost hear her thinking to herself, “Really?”
Now, I will copy this comment so I don’t lose it to cyberspace again, and so my boyfriend will know what I was doing when he thought I was ignoring him. : )
