What would you change about modern society?
The title of my post today was also the title of my first novel. Or should I say “novel”? It was basically an autobiographical accounting of the last days of my time in high school and a little while after in to the post-graduation era where I found no profound alterations to my life. The short book ends by saying there has been only “small change.” (I had no idea how far I’d come.)
At some point, a few years after its writing, I located the typed pages, found it to be way too solipsistic and self-centered, and destroyed it. I do wish I had it for personal historical value now, but the literary world didn’t need that particular set of stories.
I mention it now because what society currently needs is big change. Or many big changes. We need to alter our ways of thinking about our impact on the environment to avoid worsening climate change. We need to treat other human beings better so that we can work together on the climate and other social ills. (Just saying, “No genocide today!” isn’t enough.) And we need to transform our perception of the world from God’s waiting room to the place where humans live, without the promise of a heavenly reward. We seem to have reverted to Medieval thinking (Good vs. Evil! Conservatives vs. Liberals! Left vs. Right! USA vs. China! USA vs. Russia! USA vs. Iran! USA vs. North Korea! Etc.) and need to return to the secular humanism of the Renaissance; Biblical smiting and hatred isn’t going to cut it—and those of us who don’t believe in God flying down on a golden throne to judge the living and the dead would like to see human life held in more value.
Oh, yeah, and also get rid of Fox News., the mouthpiece of everything I just said we need to change.

If a millionaire or two in every state gives 100 people $10,000 each then would things get better? Or if America made healthcare free would things get better? I’m not trying to say wealth should be shared just that if we spread the wealth would the system start to see benefits or growth?
