The Soundtrack in My Head

What do you listen to while you work?

Of course, the way my mind works, there’s almost always a song playing in my head. Many times someone will say something, and my inner jukebox will hear the rhythm of a line and start playing a song with that same lyrical setup. Like, right now, I have ”Rhythm of the Night” by DeBarge in my head, since I just said, “the rhythm of a line.”

I once played music all the time when working at my desk. Non-stop progressive rock, of course. Either from some internet prog rock station or my vast collection on iTunes.

When working outside, I bring out my Bluetooth speaker and play something palatable for everyone, generally songs of the early 60s beloved by my fiancée. (She once wanted to go to a restaurant that was featuring a”hip-hop group,” but she meant to say “doo-wop group.”)

When I’m working alone, though, on comes the Pandora Ayreon channel. There’s a wide variety of styles that play through that, so I’m constantly entertained. And I find many Ayreon tracks more inspiring to garden labor than “Walk Like a Man” by Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. For example, “Dawn of a Million Souls.”
