Cats or Dogs?

Dogs or cats?

I often rail against false choices. The pandemic brought a lot of those into the discussion. For example, we were to choose between education and health; children were less susceptible to infection, so we needed to send them to school, and who cares if a few teachers die for the good of the cause?

That might be a bad example, but we see these either/or questions all the time. PC vs. Mac. Coke vs. Pepsi. And of course, dogs vs. cats.

None of these are as earth-shattering as those that arose during COVID, although sometimes people treat them as such. For me, it’s Mac, Coke, and cats.

When I was doing online dating, one phrase that always ended the reading of a profile was, “Must love dogs.” Turns out I don’t. I do love huskies, and I think German shepherds and collies are pretty cool. But other than those breeds, I am just not attracted to dogs as a species.

But cats: yes, love them. And they have always loved me. I’ve gone to people’s houses and they’d say, “Oh, my cat doesn’t like anyone,” and before they inhaled for their next sentence their supposedly standoffish cat was on my lap. I currently live in a house with two cats, and wouldn’t have it any other way. Including more cats. I think two might just be enough (he said in a prognosticating sort of way that leaves something open for a future blog post, that follows yesterday’s in a concerning way).
