Certainties…

List 10 things you know to be absolutely certain.

When I was growing up, people commonly proclaimed two things: 1) Never talk about politics or religion. 2) The only things certain are death and taxes.

Now we are constantly subjected to people’s religious and political views. That may be the only certainty that I can add to the list of things I am certain of.

Here we are in the 21st Century and find that, just like Faust who had four doctorates (Law, Medicine, Theology and Philosophy) in the 18th Century, “We can’t find certitude.” Of course, a lot of people feel certain about so many things—things that have been disproven with facts and evidence—but it doesn’t seem to stop them from espousing those beliefs, as loudly and as frequently as possible.

As for the statement that there are only two certain things, so many people and corporations manage to wriggle out of paying taxes, perhaps that needs to be removed from the certainty list.

I might suggest that governments reacting too slow to crises might fit the list. We see it in the movies all the time. The US government finally decides to make a positive move now that the asteroid is definitely going to destroy the earth. The governments of Earth at last band together, but that’s because there is already a significant number of zombies who have begun eating the living. The bodies are piling up, but nothing is done until it’s too late. And don’t get me started on gun control.

I hope the trend to do nothing until it’s too late will stop, but the movies have always accurately captured the foolishness of humans, from A Trip to the Moon in 1902 (“A moon dweller! Kill it!”) through The Day the Earth Stood Still in 1951 and in the present. Knowing human nature, I fear this might continue to be the case.

And that is an unfortunate certainty.

Please give me your thoughts and doubts, and don’t forget to like and/or follow!
