How important is spirituality in your life?
I grew up in the Catholic Church. And though I said, in my oft-cited (by me) memoir, Immaculate Misconceptions: Tales of Catholic School, “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic,” I don’t really believe that.
Oh, sure, I still twitch when I see a priest collar or a nun, but all of the other trappings have fallen away as much as I have. And no other religion or belief has taken hold; I know a lot of liberal Christians gravitate to Buddhism as a way of joining something with a name. That is, if you can join a philosophy that preaches no attachments.
I would classify myself as spiritual but not religious. But I don’t tap into any kind of spiritual thought on a regular basis. Occasionally, someone will say something, and I ramble through my explanation of why I think reincarnation makes sense (recycling!), but it’s not something that touches me on a daily basis. I guess that qualifies me for the Master of Secular Humanism degree.

Organized religion is built on social control unfortunately. I am sorry you had such a scarring experience. I am glad you have found middle ground these days! How is your book selling?

Not a wildly successful runaway best seller, sorry to say!

Writing the book and selling it?

Oh, that process! It started with me constantly telling the same stories over and over again for years. At some point, I decided, I should assemble it into a monologue, performance, in the style of Spaulding Gray. I did so, then reworked it into memoir form, and self-published it on Amazon. I’d still like to do new videos of a performance (the ones on YouTube are not great), and even do some public performances of it.
