York, PA Businesses (4)

On the corner of George and South streets, diagonally from Babe’s newsstand, sat Spangler’s Drug Store. Owned by a husband and wife, they were the local version of what would become chains such as Walgreen’s and CVS.

I would occasionally buy film for my cameras there but have no real recollections of the place, unless I stretch my memory. More interesting is that, when they died, the business closed down, and years later it became the site of Mr. French Fry, a black-owned business that didn’t get much custom from local white residents, given the racist nature of the town. It didn’t stop him from having a food truck, delivering hot fries the way an ice cream truck would.

Another business I have little recollection of was Gehm’s Bakery, and only include here since my cousin Bill reminded me of it. My aunt and mother would stop in occasionally for pastries, but other than a vague recalling of the counter, it’s a virtual blank.
