Many artists are concerned about the use of AI in the creation of new works. The fear, as I understand it, is that AI scoops up chunks of intellectual property the way the ST:TNG Borg removed planetary chunks, and then regurgitates it in subtly (or not so subtly) plagiarized ways. And so I’m supposed to not use AI for creative projects.
And yet, here I am, in retirement with my days devoured by doctors’ appointments and other obligations. What do I do with all these short story ideas and not as much time as I’d like to sit down and craft words into stories?
So why not use AI to help me accomplish certain tasks? Can AI be used as a collaborator? My forthcoming collection of short stories, entitled, Gawkers, True Believers, and Trolls, addresses this question. Ultimately, readers will make the determination of whether working with AI can succeed. So I offer my first short story here, “The Autumn Visitor,” to start that conversation.
