Disrupt (v.) Disrupt!

Among the words that recently I’ve come to detest from overuse are “unprecedented” and “broken.” And now it’s time to add “disrupt” to the list.

I understand the desire to shake things up. I’ve never been a fan of the static status quo. And I know you have to stir the pot in order to make the soup.

But to disrupt just for disruption’s sake, to try and look like a change agent when you are really only interested in breaking down and not building up, to destroy from the childish impulse to wreck the woodblock tower with no plan to put things back neatly in the toy box—that’s just wrong.

Let’s call out disruption for what it is: destruction. We do need renovation, renewal, and even revolution. But stop with this misguided and misleading talk of disruption. An earlier time would have labeled it “Devil’s Work,” but let’s call it out for the evil it truly is.
