An Allegory in A Desert

Two men stand in a barren desert, with nothing to be seen for miles in any direction. They face each other head on, staring into each other’s eyes, unmoving, sizing the other up.

Then one of them twists his body back and raises his right arm, and releases a slap that lands on the other’s face. The second man recoils, then recovers, and resumes his stare.

After an interminable time, the second man twists his body back, raising his arm, and slaps the first man. The first man is stunned for a moment, blinks several times, and then speaks.

“How dare you strike me?” he demands.
