Christmas Time Is Here

Just so you know: I set up this blog post days ago so I wouldn’t have to do it on Christmas Day in the morning; I assume I’ll be otherwise occupied that day. I mean today.

However, to continue my posting streak I absolutely needed to have a post for the day, and wondered what Christmas message I might have to share.

And lately I’ve noticed one change in me: I’m less resistant to the Christmas songs that suddenly arrive unbidden in my head. I let them play out. Maybe I don’t realize immediately that it is a Christmas song, and by the time I do recognize it as such, it’s too late, so it’s better to just breathe and let it continue.

And the Christmas music is not there constantly, since my mental record changer segues into other songs like Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” or The Talking Heads’ “Psychokiller” or Otis Redding’s “Dock of the Bay”—often for no reason.

Of course, there is still one song I fight to get out of my head, like Brent resisting the mental attacks of the nuclear war survivors in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. And that is my least favorite Christmas song and, according to an article on CNN Online, I am not alone in my hatred for it: Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas.”

Mazel tov! Felix Navidad! And of course Merry Christmas!

  1. In my thirties now and I still don’t like Christmas music but I do enjoy hearing (but not listening to) it during the proper season.
