The Hamster and the Hummingbird

On the porch table, overlooking the garden, is a smallish wire cage. Inside it is set a wheel, and on that wheel is a hamster. The hamster is running for his life. Is it for exercise? Is it for amusement? Looking closely at the expression on his face, he doesn’t seem to be enjoying the experience. He seems driven, driven to run ahead, with occasional glances side to side, but always running headlong forward. It goes without saying that he’s getting nowhere. But that doesn’t stop him. The running continues.

Hovering about is a hummingbird. She never alights anywhere, but is constantly in motion, checking this out, examining that. The darting motion is so fast that she almost appears to teleport from one spot in the air to another, pausing to look about, then flashing to another location a few feet away.

The hummingbird approaches the cage at times, sees the hamster for a second, then winks away. For the hamster, he takes no notice of the aerial figure appearing and disappearing in his field of vision. He’d have to look up to see her, but he continues to only look forward or side to side. They are so close in proximity to one another, yet each in their own worlds, and worlds away.

Nearby, in the warming sun, lays the cat. Eyes half-closed, he is nevertheless aware of everything in his surroundings. He sees the hamster futilely running, running fast to nowhere. He sees the hummingbird, flitting about, with no fixed spot, plan, or purpose. And he tries to produce a Cheshire-like grin as commentary on the situation, but in fact takes no amusement from the characters performing around him.

I am the cat.
